I’ve used EQ since I first discovered it, probably around 1999, which was when I started quilting. I love it. It allows me to work through design concepts without wasting fabric. It has also helped me to get published in many magazines. My best selling quilt pattern was designed in Electric Quilt. To say I’m a fan is an understatement.

I do see folks on social media complain about it from time to time. Most often I see them complain that it doesn’t write a pattern or block instructions for them. This is true. You do need a baseline understanding of quilt construction to make it work. Frankly, I find this demand of generating a pattern to be astonishing. As a pattern consumer and writer, there are so many things that go into writing a pattern. I hope software can never do it well enough to replace me.

What EQ is really good for is design. I get the ideas out of my head and onto the screen. I can plug in actual fabric (although I rarely bother), and see how it feels. I can quickly plug in other blocks, move things around, and just play. Graph paper is good, but when I want to make a change I have to re-draw the whole thing. With EQ I just make a copy.

Quilt Math becomes much easier, too. You just click a button and the block size changes. Obviously, I can do quilt math in my head, but why bother my poor little head if I can avoid it? Also, there are days when I think I can do quilt math, but what I can actually do is make a tremendously confusing mess.

I can also use it to generate approximate yardage requirements, which is very helpful when I get to the fabric purchasing part. This is very important when I’m pitching ideas to business partners, too.
